VMware ESXi Virtualization Lab

Lab and demonstration project. No client or employer information is shown.

Overview

Built a virtualization lab demonstrating VM deployment, virtual networking, storage and basic troubleshooting.

Objective

Demonstrate how virtual machines, storage and networking fit together on an ESXi host.

Technologies

  • VMware ESXi
  • vSphere
  • Virtual Machines
  • vSwitch
  • Port Groups

Architecture

  1. Users / Clients
  2. Port Groups
  3. vSwitch
  4. ESXi Host (VMs + Datastore)

Implementation

  • Installed ESXi and configured a datastore.
  • Created virtual machines and installed guest operating systems.
  • Built a vSwitch with port groups to separate traffic.
  • Practised snapshots and common VM troubleshooting.

Key configuration

  • Datastore layout
  • vSwitch and port group mapping
  • VM hardware settings

Challenges

Mapping port groups correctly so VMs could reach the right network.

Result

A working ESXi lab with VMs on separated virtual networks.

Lessons learned

Check the virtual network mapping before suspecting the guest operating system.
