Windows Server Infrastructure Lab

Lab and demonstration project. No client or employer information is shown.

Overview

Designed a Windows Server environment demonstrating domain services, DNS, DHCP, Group Policy and Windows client administration.

Objective

Show how a small office domain is built and managed: identity, name resolution, address assignment and policy.

Technologies

  • Windows Server
  • Active Directory
  • DNS
  • DHCP
  • Group Policy

Architecture

  1. Windows Client
  2. Active Directory
  3. DNS / DHCP / GPO
  4. Windows Server

Implementation

  • Installed Windows Server and promoted it to a domain controller.
  • Configured DNS zones and a DHCP scope for client machines.
  • Created OUs, users and groups, and joined a Windows client to the domain.
  • Applied Group Policy Objects to OUs and verified them from the client.

Key configuration

  • AD DS and DNS roles
  • DHCP scope and options
  • OU structure and GPO linking

Challenges

Getting DNS and DHCP settings to agree so the client could locate the domain controller.

Result

A working domain where a client receives an address, resolves the domain and applies policy.

Lessons learned

Most domain problems trace back to DNS, so validate name resolution first.
